Was driving behind a new 4 door Clubman when I noticed it has the same problem the Ferrari California does. Guess what part lights up when you hit the brakes.
Did you guess the big taillight looking things on the rear doors? Then you guess wrong, its the bar lights on the bumper. I’m guessing this is because the rear doors can be left open while driving, but it just looks so wrong.
/rant.

That's obnoxious. I was driving behind...something...a couple days ago and it was swapped - the turn signals were the hidden bars over a foot below the brake lights. Completely unnoticeable. I'm surprised that sort of thing is considered ok with all of our other over-regulations.

Probably just an electrical problem. Snark aside, I thought bumpers were too low to be allowed to house brake lights. Otherwise, tons of companies would have already done it. Shocking.

What even is the point? Especially on the California.

Isn’t that also why so many have high mount 3rd brake lights *cue Carson complaining about the Jag(?) with 3rd brake light creating an unwanted spoiler effect*

That taillight placement on the doors is bizarre. The taillight look like they were designed to go vertically at the outer edged of the doors, then got stuck horizontally in the middle by mistake.
And the whole car looks comically wide.

The Kia Sportage has that problem, it is really annoying.

I'm thinking about doing an Oppo editorial on the third brake light. Those things need to be made 100% foolproof, redundant, and LED-based on all cars. I'm so sick of those things failing because we (as drivers) have over 30 years of being weaned onto 3 brake lights, it's hard to notice when a car only has 1 or 2 left.

Do it. Plus I think all examples should come from Oppo rides.

EU visibility regs. Various lights have to be visible when the doors are open.
Some makers install extra lights inside instead.

Really should be fool proof and wired IN PARALLEL!
The one on our 2012 s60 went out a few months back. And it was LEDs. The whole thing went out. There was no dash warning. And in the sun you could barely see the brake lights!
Luckily i was driving behind her one day and noticed

Weird, I'd have figured the big guys would be the standard brake lights then it would fall back on the bumper ones if the rear doors were open.

A new Kia sport ute does this too. Soo stupid.

Completely agree. Our 2002 Focus had like 8 little 194 bulbs in the third brake light, on the trunk lid, which always gets slammed shut and transmits a huge shock to the bulbs. I don’t think we ever had all of the bulbs working at the same time.
And don’t get me started on the license plate lights - they were even more fragile. Eventually I put in LED bulbs just so they’d stop burning out all the time!

I don’t understand why it can’t be both. As long as there is a visible brake light available at all times, it shouldn’t matter where the other ones are.

This.
The previous gen had doors that opened around the lights, which is a lot more elegant (and less confusing!).

The other day I saw an old Escape with that had tinted taillights, so the third brake light was the only one you could see.

And it looks super cool, how the door wrap around the lights. I've always thought that was neat, but never knew it had a real purpose, other then maybe making Tudor open a bit bigger.

Exactly, so much better looking.

It really does, so odd looking.

Some Audi’s are like that, Q7 maybe? So annoying.

That would be a cool idea. Or just light up all 5 and say fuck it.

So if the doors are open you still have brake lights. On the California because you can open the top while driving at a certain speed. Dumb though.
